We believe that science is a creative area of the curriculum that requires children to be flexible thinkers. To encourage an interest in scientific enquiry we teach science through carefully planned units of work. During the Foundation Stage, Reception children will be given opportunities to solve problems, predict, experiment and explore in a variety of contexts. These opportunities continue throughout Key stages 1 (Yrs 1&2) & 2 (Yrs 3-6).
The national curriculum for science aims to ensure that all pupils:
- develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
- develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
- are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.
Children are encouraged through direct practical experience to plan and test their ideas, observe carefully and ask questions and to think about and interpret their findings.
