Art and Design

Intent

At Stamfordham, we aim to provide an art / DT curriculum which enables all learners to explore the arts and develop their skills over time.  As well as weekly art / DT lessons, we also have art focus weeks which allows the pupils to work with different media and explore the work of famous artists.  We organise art-based trips and provide extra-curricular clubs to further enhance the provision we have to offer.

Rationale

The purpose of art and design in the National Curriculum is to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own pieces of art, craft and design as well as thinking critically about their work. The aims of the National Curriculum are to ensure that all pupils produce creative work; become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other techniques; use the language of art to evaluate and analyse creative works; and know about great artists, craft makers and designers and understand the historical and cultural developments of their art forms.

Implementation

At Stamfordham, art and design is carefully planned so that pupils are given the opportunity to make progress with their art and design skills while also producing art that links to the topics they are studying.

Pupils are given the chance to work with a wide range of materials and are encouraged to be creative and confident during lessons.  Over the time they spend at Stamfordham, children will learn about famous artists from around the world, including the work of local artists, past and present.  We also have art / DT focus weeks where children get to visit galleries and hold exhibitions to show off their talents.  This gives the children a real sense of pride.

All children receive a sketch book at the start of school and this travels through school with them which allows them to see their progress over time and inspires them to be their best.

Impact

Progress in art and design is monitored termly to ensure all pupils meet their full potential.  Pupils are given lots of opportunities in other subjects to consolidate and transfer the skills they have learnt in art and design.

SEND

We aim for all our SEND children to achieve their full potential in art and design.  We are ambitious in what we want them to achieve and plan activities that are accessible to all allowing them to be creative and excel.  Where needed, we:

* Provide additional resources

* Use teacher and TA support to provide additional support

* Provide flexibility with the timescale of the task
